When I was a small girl, my mother would bring home candy for me every day. Sometimes there wasn’t one. So, I went to look in her handbag to see if there was still one to be found.
I would open it and plunge into another universe. The handbag is an intimate, fascinating world.
It makes keys, lipsticks, and chocolate disappear.
It swallows everything you need or do not need.
The French sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann calls it a ” universe full of mysterious laws”. Classic, practical, or individualistic – the bags reveal a lot about the people who carry them.
They are modern or worn, minimalist or spacious, tidy, or chaotic. I have been dealing with the mystery of a women’s handbag since 2019 and have meticulously documented the entire contents of different types of women. From sunglasses to stockings, from smartphone to keyring – the entire handbag is being cleared out and all its contents put into a picture and transferred onto paper or wood.
All the details are being made visible in an abstract context.
